Abstract | |||
In U.S. Veterans hospital data, we investigated the link between inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease), appendectomy and cancer. We found no evidence of a reduced risk of ulcerative colitis subsequent to appendectomy in U.S. veterans. In contrast to patients with ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease patients were at increased risk of cancers of the small intestine, but not colorectal cancers. V.A. hospitalization database, Patient Treatment File, and Outpatient Clinic File The U.S. Veterans hospital data for 1969-1996 includes 5 million white male veterans and 1 million black male veterans (25 million hospital visits). We are assessing racial differences in medical risk factors. Some of the cohorts under analysis are patients with diagnoses of sarcoidosis, psoriasis, gout, obesity, and inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease). We are analyzing risk factors for male breast cancer. |
